Description

Mwela rock art site is a national monument north of the Kasama Mungwi/Isoka road some seven (7) kilometres east of Kasama. The Mwela and adjacent Sumina rock are a region of huge boulders and fragmented granite rocky outcrops which afford innumerable small overhangs and cave protecting surfaces ideal for paintings. The area contains over 600 recorded paintings, some of which are naturalistic and schematic and have been attributed to the works of the late stone age communities. The full extent of the existance of this unique heritage is yet to be ascertaifned. Preliminary indications are that close to 1000 rock paintings are available in the area. The site was declared a national monument under notice number 255 of 1964. As a monument it is one of the many sites kwhose preservation and protection is ensured by the national heritage conservation commission act established under cap.23 of 1989 of the laws of Zambia.
