Description

The term "Island of Meroe" was used by some of the Classical writers to designate the region comprised between the Blue Nile, the White Nile and the Atbara River in the Republic of Sudan; thus not a complete Island, but surrounded by water on three sides. This is the heartland of the Meroitic Kingdom. Meroe - Meroe was the capital of the Meroitic Kingdom (4th Century B.C. - 4th century A.D.). This vast site contains the remains of a royal city (palaces, temples, and paths), royal, npble and public cemeteries. The site contains the most vast pyramid field in the country. Some of these pyramids have been restored. Musawwarat es-Sufra - The site is dated to the Meroitic period. The buildings have been erected during the four first centuries of our era. They include many temples. One of them, the lion temple has been restored to the roof level. It is a very beautiful temple with fine reliefs and inscriptions. Another very vast sand store building, the Great Enclosure, is also decorated with reliefs and Graffite in many languages. Naqa - The site is dated to the Merotic period, most of the structures were built during the early centuries B.C. or early centuries A.D. More than 5 temples have been built on the site. Two of them are preserved almost to the roof level. Some of the temples have been decorated with fine reliefs and inscription in hieroglyphic and Meroitic languages. A great part of the site has not yet been excavated.
