The Australian Convict Sites nomination consists of a series of sites that, in combination, express the key aspects of the Australian convict experience that are of outstanding universal value from the point of view of global history. The description of the individual sites that make up the nomination is as follows:



First Government House Site, New South Wales

Comprising the immediate site of Governors’ Place and the museum footprint, that is, the archaeological foundations under the Museum of Sydney and its forecourt facing Bridge Street, Sydney. The site also incorporates the continuation of the physical remains of First Government House under Bridge, Phillip and Young Streets.



Hyde Park Barracks, New South Wales

Comprising the Hyde Park Barracks building, perimeter buildings and walls, and courtyard of Hyde Park Barracks (1819-48). Located on Macquarie Street, Sydney.



Great North Road Complex, New South Wales

Comprising the Devine's Hill section of the Great North Road, Finch's Line of road, and the Devine's Hill convict stockade (1828-32), located on the Hawkesbury River 55 km north-west of Sydney city.



Darlington Probation Station, Maria Island National Park, Tasmania

Comprising the buildings and sites that make up the Darlington Probation Station (1825-32, and 1842-50), including numerous residential buildings, Chapel, Cook House and Bread Store, Visiting Magistrate's and Superintendent's Offices, Penitentiary, Convict Barn, Mess Hall, Bakehouse and Clothing Store, Hop Kilns, Commissariat Store, and their associated landscape. Located at the north western end of Maria Island, off Tasmania's east coast.



Port Arthur Historic Site, Tasmania

Comprising the buildings and sites of Tasmania's principal convict establishment (1832-77) at Port Arthur, including the Penitentiary, Separate Prison, Asylum, Guard Tower, Hospital, Civil Officer’s Row and Dockyard residences, Church, Commandant's Residence, Isle of the Dead Cemetery, and Point Puer Boys Prison, and associated landscape. Located on the Tasman Peninsula in Tasmania's south-east.



Coal Mines Historic Site, Tasmania

Comprising the buildings and sites of the Coal Mines Convict Establishment (1833-48), including the mine shafts, mine prison complex and cells, inclined tramway, jetty and Commissariat Stores site, quarries and cottage sites, and their associated landscape. Located at the north western corner of the Tasman Peninsula in Tasmania's south-east.



Ross Female Convict Station Historic Site, Tasmania

Comprising the buildings and sites that make up the Ross Female Convict Station Historic Site (1847-1855), including archaeological site of the former female convict station, containing foundations and deposits of the whole of the original station and the extant Assistant Superintendent’s Cottage. Located in the town of Ross, in the Midlands region of Tasmania.



Fremantle Prison, Western Australia

Comprising the Fremantle Prison complex and perimeter walls, the Terrace cottages, the Ramp, and the Henderson Street Warders’ Cottages (convict era occupation 1850-86). Located in central Fremantle, on the south western coast of Western Australia.
