Description
Yuan Shangdu Upper Capital of Yuan Dynasty) was initially built in sixth year of Emperor Xianzong in the Yuan Dynasty (1256 A.D.) and named Kaiping Prefecture. It was then renamed Shangdu (Upper Capital) and became one of the two capitals of Yuan Dynasty together with Yuan Dadu (the Grand Capital in Beijing). The city plane is square with each side 2200 meters long. Layout of the city is in good order and simmetry including palace, court and outer city which lie on a central axis. There are such ruins in the palace as Daming Hall, Da'an Pavillion etc.,and also towers at four corners of the palace bordered with bricks. The court bordered with stone is imperial quarter. It cycles the palace with well-arranged roads. The outer city is built completely with earth. To the northwest of the court is the area of temples, imperial gardens and workshops. The east, south and west parts outside the city are the area of markets, living residences and ware houses. The book "Travels of Marco Polo" lively described the city's magnificence and flourishing in detail. In recent years, archaeologists have found a lot of structure components such as glazed tiles, white marble carving etc. at the remains of Da'an Pavilion. It was used as the place for taking office and enthronement of the emperors in the Yuan Dynasty. Marco Polo was also received by Kublai Khan here. Moreover, the places had been confirmed as a site to make sacrificial offerings to imperial ancestors and the water conservancy project and huge imperial tents ruins were left. The Historical Remains of Yuan Shangdu was the first international capital built by Mongol on the grasslands that was the important evidence and inheriance to the splendid history of Mongolian nationality and the Yuan Dynasty.
