The Asia-Pacific World Heritage Youth Forum in Beijing, China, 15-21 September 1997, will gather some 100 students and teachers from 21 countries in the region.  The objective is to involve young people in World Heritage preservation and promotion through discussions and creative workshops at the World Heritage sites of The Great Wall, Peking Man Site at Zhoukoudian and the Imperial Palace of the Ming and Qing Dynasties (Forbidden City). Assuming the role of the archaeologist, conservator, manager, etc. and divided into groups, the students will explore what it takes to manage and conserve a heritage site. The teachers will focus on how to teach about heritage, discussing the draft World Heritage Education Kit, which is being prepared by UNESCO for international distribution in 1998. The Kit will be an inter-active tool for secondary-school teachers to use across the curriculum to introduce the 1972 UNESCO World Heritage Convention and to discover heritage in relation to environment, peace, identity and tourism.

The Asia-Pacific World Heritage Youth Forum is the third regional World Heritage Youth Forum since UNESCO launched the Interregional Project "Young People's Participation in World Heritage Preservation and Promotion" in 1994. The very first Forum was international and held in Bergen, Norway in 1995. The overall aim of the Project is to introduce World Heritage Education into the curriculum of secondary schools, using the worldwide network of 4,000 UNESCO Associated Schools. The Project is supported by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) and the Rhone-Poulenc Foundation, France.

The Asia-Pacific World Heritage Youth Forum is organized by UNESCO and the Chinese National Commission for UNESCO. The following countries are invited: Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Viet Nam.
