Description
The Ensemble of Registan was erected on the square of the same name from the XI-XII centuries. The ensemble was completed in the XVII century and consists of three madrasahs - Ulughbek (1417-1420), Shir-Dor (1612 - 1636), and Tillya-Kori (1647- 1660). The trade construction Chor—su was built at the north-eastern side of Shir-Dor in the XIII century. Ulughbek's madrasah is situated at the western part. The compositional centre of the madrasah includes inside square—shaped yerd which is surrounded by two- storeyed sells with loggias, high portals of summer liwans. Two winter two-storeyed lecture-rooms were situated at the corners of the main portal and the mosque at the western façade.- Rich decoration is presented by carved brick majolica mosaic. The compositional plan of Shir—Dor is the same as the plan of Ulughbek madrasah, but there are some differences in details. The mosaic's tracery of Shir-Dor (Lions owners) with images of lions gave the name to this construction. The construction of Tillya-Kori completed the composition of the complex of Registan. The rich decoration of relief golden murals in the mosque was the reason to name this construction Tillya-Kori (covered by gold). The concordance of the plans, decoration and forms makes this complex ceremonial and it is possible to call this ensemble of Registan- Samarkand's Forum.
