Description
Lowell Observatory, Arizona. Astronomical research conducted at this observatory, founded by Dr.Percival Lowell, has greatly enhanced man's knowledge of the universe. Most significant of the observatory's discoveries was the first observable evidence of the expanding universe, made by Dr. V.M. Slipher in 1912. The observatory is also noted for intensive studies
of Mars, the discovery of Pluto, and research in zodiacal light and sunspot phenomena. The 24-inch Lowell refracting telescope, installed in 1896, is in operation in its original housing.
