Information presented to the Bureau of the World Heritage Committee in 1993

The Centre was informed, in March 1993, about the possibility of a road construction project in the immediate vicinity of the Acropolis of Samos, in front of the tunnel Eupalinos. The Centre, by letter dated 12 March 1993, requested information from the Greek authorities pertaining to the road construction project. The Greek authorities, in their reply dated 25 April 1993, informed the Centre that the road construction project is directly under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture which is of the view that the project does not endanger the site nor the tunnel of Eupalinos.

Conservation issues presented to the World Heritage Committee in 1993

In March 1993, the Centre learnt that the construction of a road was foreseen in the immediate vicinity of the Acropolis of Samos, in front of the Tunnel of Eupalinos, and by letter of 12 March 1993 requested the Greek authorities for information on this subject.

In their reply of 25 April 1993, the Greek authorities informed the Centre that the project is directly under the supervision of the Ministry of culture, which feels that the project would not endanger the site nor the Tunnel.

At its seventeenth session in June 1993, the Bureau adopted the view of the Rapporteur who stressed that, considering the archaeological importance of the site, additional detailed information should be requested by the Centre about this project and its progress. The Centre requested further information from the Greek authorities by letter of 3 August 1993 and will communicate the response to the Committee at its seventeenth session if they are in a position to do so at that time.

Decision Adopted: 17 BUR VIII.2

The Bureau was informed that a road construction project, in the immediate vicinity of the Acropolis of Samos, in front of the Tunnel of Eupalinos, was submitted to the Ministry of Culture. The Greek authorities reported that the project is directly under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture, which is of the view that the project will not endanger the site or theTunnel. The Greek Observer pointed out that the road construction is still in the project stage and that the final decision has not yet been taken.

The Rapporteur stressed that, for an archaeological site of such importance, additional detailed information on the project should be provided, and not merely simple assurances that the project will not endanger the site. The Bureau endorsed this suggestion, and requested the World Heritage Centre to act accordingly. Finally, the Greek Observer stressed the point raised at the last Committee session in Santa Fe regarding the verification of information received by the Secretariat before presenting it to the Committee

Decision Adopted: 17 COM X

Samos (Greece)

The Greek authorities informed the Bureau at its seventeenth session that a road project would be undertaken under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and that this project would not endanger the site nor the Eupalinos Tunnel. The Central Archaeological Council recently informed the Centre that the proposed road project has been rejected. The municipality was therefore studying alternative solutions that would not affect the protected area.
