Providing young people and the general public with the necessary knowledge, skills, networks, and commitment to become involved in heritage protection is a major objective but also one of the greatest challenges facing the World Heritage Convention and its partners.
UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre and HISTORY® partnered to increase awareness about heritage preservation worldwide, in particular, to promote education about World Heritage. New pedagogical approaches were developed to mobilize young people to participate actively in the promotion of World Heritage sites, about the history and traditions of their own and other cultures.
The partnership consists of the production of Public Service Announcements which air on HISTORY® in North America and its international channels as well as on the web, such as the Save Our History and HISTORY® Classroom websites and short films to help raise awareness on World Heritage conservation. HISTORY® also takes advantage of its broad educational network of teachers to disseminate World Heritage content through promotional editorials, newsletters, and ads, for example in the Idea Book for Educators, which has approximately 300,000 individual subscribers. HISTORY® also created a live webcast, available online, about World Heritage sites worldwide, with free educational materials and outreach efforts. The webcast included students from around the world speaking about World Heritage sites in their countries. This initiative has enhanced the visibility of the World Heritage Convention’s 40th anniversary celebrations, opening up paths for mobilizing new funding sources for World Heritage sites, and creating activities that educate the public about the need to conserve World Heritage sites around the world.
