         <title>UNESCO joins United Nations effort in response to Peruvian earthquake</title>
         <description><![CDATA[UNESCO&amp;#39;s&#xa0;World Heritage Centre extends its deepest sympathies to those who have been affected by the powerful August 15 earthquake in Peru,&#xa0;which measured 7.9 on the Richter scale and left&#xa0;some 500 people dead and over a thousand victims.&#xa0;Peru has 10 properties inscribed on the World Heritage List, including the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, the Historic Centre of Lima, and the&#xa0;Chan Chan Archeological Zone.&#xa0;No reports of major damage&#xa0;to these sites have been received&#xa0;so far, but  ...]]></description>

         <title>World Heritage Committee Inscribes 61 New Sites on World Heritage List</title>
         <description><![CDATA[Cairns - UNESCO&apos;s World Heritage Committee, meeting since November 27 in Cairns, Australia, has inscribed 61 new cultural and natural sites on the World Heritage. The List now has 690 sites of &amp;quot;exceptional universal value&amp;quot; in 122 countries. Sites in Azerbaijan, Malaysia, Nicaragua and Suriname are on the List for the first time.
