The Government of Italy has granted 400,000€ to support a new UNESCO project to build capacity for safeguarding cultural heritage in Myanmar.

The contribution will allow UNESCO to mobilize international expertise to assist Myanmar in protecting important heritage sites in the country, in particular, the ancient Pyu settlements dating back almost two millennia and Bagan, one of the world’s most historically and artistically significant ensembles of religious monuments. The project aims to raise awareness and technical capacity for restoring and managing cultural heritage sites in Myanmar.

Designed in close collaboration with the Myanmar Ministry of Culture’s Department of Archaeology, National Museum and Library, the project will be undertaken over the course of twelve months.

Francesco Bandarin, Assistant Director-General for Culture, said “The enormity of the task of safeguarding Myanmar’s rich cultural heritage calls for the cooperation of the international community to ensure that it can be protected for future generations of humanity. This project will be a vital step forward in this effort.”

As the first UNESCO project benefitting Myanmar’s culture sector in a decade, the contribution from Italy is intended to initiate activities that will build the momentum for future international support to further strengthen Myanmar’s ability to preserve its cultural heritage.

Myanmar ratified the World Heritage Convention in April 1994, and does not yet have any sites on the World Heritage List.
