The Honorable Jim Prentice, Canada's Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, has introduced a bill which resulted in an important expansion of the Nahanni National Park Reserve of Canada. This followed a commitment made in 2009 by the Government of Canada. Through this proposed law, the Nahanni area is six times larger, making this 3000-km² park the third largest park in Canada. The site was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1978 for its remarkable natural features, as Nahanni offers examples of two ecosystems and geological features: the boreal forest and alpine tundra.  The park also includes a large part of the most spectacular karst region of the Western hemisphere.

Consequently, the expansion of the park will lead to a reassessment of the World Heritage site as a protected area and will represent almost the entire watershed of the South Nahanni River.

Moreover, as explained by the Honorable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development , "Nahanni National Park Reserve is important for the culture of the Deh Cho First Nations. The expansion of the reserve will ensure that Nahanni can continue to be revered as a place shrouded in mystery, spirituality and healing."

At a time when it is necessary to preserve this wealth of natural and cultural diversity, such an initiative can only be welcomed.
