In memoriam: Michel Parent

The World Heritage Centre wishes to pay tribute to Michel Parent, a leading personality of world cultural heritage, who passed away last week at the age of ninety-three.

Born in 1916 in Neuilly sur Seine, France, Michel Parent was a highly active and creative man. During his impressive career, he successively became Inspector (1945) and Inspector General (1958) of Sites, Inspector General for French Historical Monuments (1969), founder and President of the Burgundy Nights Festival (1954-1984), President of the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS -1981-1987), and was the author of books on architecture and heritage as well as several plays.

Michel Parent also played an important role for UNESCO and the World Heritage Centre, acting as an expert consultant for Brazil in Tunis, Assouan, Bruges, and Gorée, and was a member of the World Heritage Committee.
