The Sub-regional workshop on World Heritage Education for Africa was organized in parallel with the 6th bi-annual SADCAMM (Southern Africa Development Community Association of Museums and Monuments) conference.
Objectives of the Workshop
- Creation of an awareness of the project
- Increase knowledge of the World Heritage Educational Resource Kit
- Come up with recommendations on introduction/use of the Kit in SADC (The Southern African Development Community)
- Identification of the need of training
- Identification of possible trainers
- Evaluation of the Kit and Recommendations for its modification
Recommendations of the Workshop
1. The creation of a regional SADCAMM Committee:
- The Committee should be made up of one national representative from all SADCAMM countries. An interim Regional Committee should meet during this conference.
- National Representatives to chair national WHEP Committees.
- National Committees to produce National Plans of Action. Matters to be addressed should include:
- Which different groups to target
- Possible different formats for the Kit and possible local production
- Implications for funding and identification of potential sources of funding
- The National Action Plans should be submitted to the Regional Committee within 8 months.
2. The Regional SADCAMM World Heritage Education Project Committee should investigate the existing training provision within the region, potential sources of funding for training, and the provision of training in different languages
3. The World Heritage in Young Hands Resource Kit should be translated into Portuguese.
4. A possible link should be explored between the SADCAMM WHEP and UNESCO's Slave Route program.
5. There should be a follow up seminar at the 2nd Regional Committee coordinated by SADCAMM, to discuss experiences of testing the Kit and of the progress of National Action Plans
As a result of discussions on the Kit "World Heritage in young hands", participants concluded that:
- It would be unlikely that WHE will be introduced as a new subject, but there is a great potential for integrating the Kit into existing curricula with appropriate training.
- The contents and examples given in the Kit provide insufficient references to the region; modifications are needed to include information on local sites.
- The approach to WHE should be from the "known to unknown". Local sites should be taught first followed by sites in other countries and regions.
46 participants from 14 countries; the workshop gathered education, World Heritage conservation and experts from wide range of professional fields.
