The Patrimonito International Storyboard Competition 2010 / 2011 was launched by UNESCO World Heritage Centre in June 2010 inviting young people to create storyboards on four specific themes cherished by UNESCO: the role of communities, sustainable development, sustainable tourism and biodiversity .
Within the framework of the World Heritage Education Programme, the initiative aims to provide young people with an opportunity to use their creative and problem-solving skills to raise awareness about World Heritage sites.
The young creators responded by sending their storyboard entries to the National Commission of their country, who in turn sent their national selection (a maximum of 5 best storyboards for each theme), to UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
The World Heritage Centre received a total of 289 storyboards from National Commissions of 43 State Parties . Three winners per theme were selected by an independent jury composed of heritage and education specialists, on April 7th and 8th 2011.
The first place winner of each theme will be professionally developed into an episode of the animated cartoon Patrimonito's World Heritage Adventures. In line with the main topic of the 40th Anniversary of the World Heritage Convention in 2012, the first production will concern the theme of the role of communities in World Heritage preservation . The winning storyboard on this theme deals with the City of Cuzco, Peru . Production will begin in May 2011.
The World Heritage Education Programme would like to thank all the authors, the teachers, the schools and associations, the National Commissions, and the members of the short-listing process and the final jury for their invaluable contribution to the Patrimonito International Storyboard Competition 2010-2011.
