2 - Ongoing university projects supported by UNESCO World Heritage Centre
TEMPUS Project 2003 - 2006
Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan and BTU in Cottbus, Germany.
The TEMPUS project aims at establishing teaching and training programmes in the field of cultural heritage conservation and management. The project, the first of its kind in Jordan, will contribute in meeting the demand for professionally skilled personnel in this sector, both nationally and regionally.
Within the framework of these programmes students as well as faculty exchanges have been organized. The 24 Brandenburg Technical University (BTU) World Heritage Studies programme students had a unique opportunity to experience site training. Also, the project can contribute in building capacities in the Arab region, as the programmes are fully opened to interested participants of the whole region.
The Project is carried out jointly by Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan and BTU in Cottbus, Germany. It is sponsored by the European Training Foundation (ETF) of the European Commission.
In the course of its implementation (2003 - 2006) the project has achieved significant progress through a number of activities.
Jordan has few natural resources, but contains one of the highest concentrations of monuments and archaeological sites in the world, which may be considered as one of its principle assets. The efforts to preserve and effectively manage the country's cultural heritage are hampered by many obstacles. General guidelines and best practice manuals need to be elaborated and widely disseminated. Management plans involving the local population and raising awareness on cultural heritage are also needed. This may contribute to formulating strategies and policies for an effective protection, conservation and safeguarding of the country's rich cultural resources.
